World Radio Day 2014 around the World

13 February is World Radio Day — a day to celebrate radio as a medium; to improve international cooperation between broadcasters; and to encourage major networks and community radio alike to promote access to information, freedom of expression and gender equality over the airwaves.

UNESCO Headquarters - Paris

On 13 February 2014, UNESCO celebrated World Radio Day in Paris by welcoming eight radio stations to broadcast live from its Headquarters. China Radio International, MIR Radio, Monte Carlo Doualiya Radio, Radio Nacional de España (REE), Radio France Internationale (RFI), Radio Orient, Radio VL and WNYU transmitted programmes from UNESCO’s Open Hall, reaching millions of listeners around the world.

World Radio Day Gala Event & Planning Meeting for WRD 2015

UNESCO Deputy Director-General, Getachew Engida, addressed a celebration of World Radio Day at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris on 13 February. Speaking with him were Annike Nyberg, Media Director at the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), and John Maguire, Director-General of the International Radio and Television Union (URTI).

The Gala event was a concert produced by the Orchestre National de France at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and broadcast live on France Musique.

Plans for the 2015 World Radio Day were the subject of discussion at a meeting on 14 February between UNESCO and 13 international broadcast organisations. The Day will celebrate its fourth anniversary in 2015.

World Radio Day was proclaimed by UNESCO  in 2011 and subsequently endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly.

Accra, Ghana

Accra, February 14, 2014 – A public forum was held in Accra to mark World Radio Day 2014. The occasion also afforded three invited radio stations to exhibit their work at a side event which took place at the International Press Centre. The three radio stations are Radio Universe, a community radio at the University of Ghana, Live FM and Y FM, both private radio stations in Accra. A minute silence was observed by participants at the start of the event in memory of Komla Dumor, the Ghanaian journalist of BBC fame who passed on early this year. More...

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

On February 18, 2014, the U.S. Embassy organized a round table discussion with radio journalists to celebrate World Radio Day. This year’s theme focuses on promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment over radio. Women journalists from various radio stations attended the event and discussed the role of women journalists in bringing women’s issues into the forefront of the media. They also pointed out challenges they faced while working on women’s programs and discussed ways forward to make women’s voices heard through radio.

Kisumui County, Kenya

UNESCO marked World Radio Day on 13 February 2014 under the theme: Women in Radio and those who support them in Kisumu, Kenya. The event brought together 50 participants from Media Houses, Community Radios Stations, Non-Governmental Organizations and Kisumu County Government Officials. More...

Panel discussion from World Radio Day at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), 13th February 2014. "Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women Through Radio" with keynote speakers Birgitte Jallov, Director of Empowerhouse; Tim Williams, Non-Executive Director and Deputy Director of the UK National Commission for UNESCO; Farid Littleproud, Director of Operations at Media Diversity Institute; Charlotte Bannister-Parker, Chair of the Children's Radio Foundation. The panel was chaired by SOAS Ph.D. student Robtel Neajai Pailey.

World Radio Day 2014 at SOAS was organised by SOAS Radio and The Centre of African Studies, supported by UNESCO. Many thanks to all who participated and made the day a great success.

Santiago, Chile

UNESCO Regional Bureau for Education in Latin America and the Caribbean collaborated with the University of Chile radio and AMARC to produce and disseminate an hour-long radio programme to celebrate World Radio Day.

Windhoek, Namibia

On 13 February 2014, MISA Namibia, UNESCO, civil society organisations and numerous radio stations commemorated World Radio Day in Windhoek, Namibia, with a full day’s programme.

The Media Institute of Southern African (MISA) joined the rest of the world to mark the third World Radio Day and to celebrate radio as a medium and the positive impact it has around the world.

The event’s programme included presentations by several radio stations, UNESCO and European Union representatives, The Honourable Hon. Rosalia Nghidinwa, Namibia's Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare and the Minister for Information and Communication Technology of Namibia.

There were also two panel discussions, performances throughout the day, and a dance in the evening to close festivities. More...
