Fourth Interregional Meeting of National Commissions for UNESCO

The 4th Interregional Meeting of National Commissions took place on Friday 27 October 2017 in Room XI of UNESCO Headquarters.

More than 200 participants representing 137 Member States/Associate Members and 21 Field Offices.

The meeting was opened by Mr Eric Falt, Assistant Director-General for External Relations and Public Information. Mr James Bridge, Secretary-General of the UK National Commission, was appointed as Chair; Ms Loubna Sulaybikh, Secretary General of the Bahrain National Commission, and Ms İrem Alpaslan, Assistant Secretary General of the Turkish National Commission, as Rapporteurs.

In the morning, the agenda comprised three topics, namely “Effective implementation of SDGs, mainly SDG 4 through sharing of experiences, and other endeavours” presented by Mr Jean-Yves Le Saux, Director of the Bureau of Strategic Planning, and Ms Anna D’Addio, Senior Policy Analyst of the Global Education Monitoring Report (GEM Report) team; “Regulatory framework regarding Associations, Centres and Clubs for UNESCO” presented by Mr Eric Falt; and open discussion on “Strengthening the role of NatComs in coordinating UNESCO programmes and expanding their cooperation with HQ and other NatComs”.

In the afternoon, the topic on “the role of NatComs” continued and an interface session on “Promoting efficient interaction between NatComs and UNESCO Field Offices” was also organized. This topic was introduced by Mr Axel Plathe, Director of Field Support and Coordination, followed by presentations from four representatives of Directors of Field Offices, namely Ms Ann Therese Ndong Jatta, Director of the Multi-Sectoral Office in Nairobi for East Africa, Mr Shigeru Aoyagi, Director of New Delhi Cluster Office, Ms Katherine Grigsby, Director of UNESCO Office in Kingston, and Ms Krista Pikkat, Director of UNESCO Office in Almaty.

These presentations were followed by a fruitful exchange of information and views among the participants.

The meeting was closed by Mrs Irina Bokova, Director-General. After the meeting, a group photo session with the DG was organized, and the Turkish National Commission kindly hosted a reception for the participants.
