Online meeting with National Commissions on Gender Equality
The event took place on 22 June 2021 with participation of Jamila Seftaoui, Director of UNESCO Division for Gender Equality, who shared her vision for the next 2 years
Online meeting with National Commissions on Gender Equality took place on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 (1 p.m. to 2 p.m.), with participation of over 150 participants from National Commissions, Permanent Delegations, UNESCO Secretariat and Field Offices.
The meeting aimed to present key actions undertaken by UNESCO to support Gender Equality as well as to introduce Ms Jamila Seftaoui, new Director of UNESCO Division for Gender Equality. It was also an opportunity for National Commissions to share their respective projects and initiatives in favor of Gender Equality.
In her presentation Ms Jamila Seftaoui outlined her vision of the mandate and role of the Division of Gender Equality highlighting these 3 points:
1- consolidate and support the work of the sectors and the field offices on mainstreaming GE approach into their fields of competence, through strategic guidance, advice on project development, review and analysis of work plans, coordination;
2- provide knowledge, capacity building and training;
3- innovate and increase coherence and quality and maximize transformative impact and intersectoral work through new flagships.
In this relation, over the next 2 years it is planned to launch a facility of gender experts with the purpose of developing a lasting professional capacity among those who implement UNESCO’s work for GE on the ground as well as two flagships:
1. Positive masculinities, designed to identify and increase men’s and boys gender inclusive behaviours through global and national campaigns, conferences, workshops, exhibitions, awards, research and specialized publications.
2. Empowering Women Creators/Creative industries, aimed to empower women through businesses in creative industries in close cooperation with the Global priority Africa, the cultural and the scientific sectors, and regional field hubs in Africa.
The meeting continued with an interactive Q&A session and sharing of ideas and experiences by National Commissions of the United Kingdom, France, Benin, Slovenia, Germany, Zambia, Romania, Turkey and others.
