49th Session of the IOC-UNESCO Executive Council
The Executive Council provides an opportunity for parallel exchanges on current ocean-related issues. Below is a list of side events organized this year between 7 and 10 June 2016.

IOC-UNESCO Roger Revelle Memorial Lecture

The Roger Revelle Memorial Lecture Series is a traditional element of IOC Executive Councils. It is named in honour of Roger Revelle, whose important contributions to the awareness of global change form the basis of many IOC initiatives today.
This year's lecture, “Ocean acidification and other stressors on marine systems: How can we help the oceans help us?”, was given by Professor Ken Caldeira, climate scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science (USA).
Exhibition: “Sounds of the Silent World: Diversity of Natural Sounds in the Ocean and Impacts of Acoustic Pollution on Marine Life”

Organized by the Permanent Delegations of Palau and Sweden to UNESCO, in collaboration with The Cousteau Society and the IUCN
Distant whale moans, music of dolphins, earthquakes and typhoons: the ocean is far from silent and is dominated with constant natural noises to which marine creatures have adapted over millions of years. The industrial revolution, which brought along sonar technology and marine vessels, has had a significant impact on life underseas.
“Sounds of the Silent World: Diversity of Natural Sounds in the Ocean and Impacts of Acoustic Pollution on Marine Life” invites the public to an immersive experience on underwater noise pollution. This interactive exhibition features audio recordings of the ocean and visuals of deep ocean creatures.
Information Workshop: Global Ocean Science Report

The Global Ocean Science Report (GOSR) is envisaged to serve as a knowledge resource that will aid Member States, its local and national governments, academic and research institutions, as well as international organizations and donors in making informed decisions regarding the strategy and investment at the national level for ocean sciences. The content and outline are aligned with the major pillars of the Sustainable Development Goals, including ocean and human health.
During the side event, Member States were informed on the status of the preparation of the GOSR. The drafting process is well underway and the IOC Secretariat thus offered interested delegates to the 49th IOC Executive Council an opportunity to interact and ask questions on the progress of the Report.
