Biodiversity and Science Policy

UNESCO helps governments and policy-makers make informed decisions on biodiversity issues by collecting, peer-reviewing and 'packaging' scientific information in the form of sub-global scientific assessments and policy briefs.
UNESCO also co-sponsors global assessments that identify policy responses in different areas and also contributes in intergovernmental mechanisms and initiatives that strengthen the science-policy interface, namely the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).

UNESCO is also a member of the Advidory Committee of the Sub-Global Assessment Network. The SGA Network seeks to create a common platform for practitioners (individuals and organizations) involved in ecosystem assessment at regional, sub-regional, national and sub-national levels. The intention is to promote and facilitate improved capacity in undertaking and using assessments. Achievements of the SGA Network will support relevant global processes such as the Intergovernmental Science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and the Multilateral Environmental Agreements.
