The International Day for Tolerance is celebrated on 16 November 2016 and World Philosophy Day, which falls on the third Thursday of November each year, will be celebrated this year on 17 November 2016.

The UNESCO House for a Culture of Peace in Bujumbura will celebrate these two days together throughout a full day of events on 17 November 2016, as the themes addressed are interrelated and complimentary to one another.

Among the activities planned, debates will take place on the theme “Philosophy and Tolerance enabling Intercultural Dialogue and Social Transformations” at the CELAB Center for Languages, University of Burundi.

Since 2014, local NGO Education Initiative for Tolerance and Non-Violence (IETV) has been cooperating with other international organizations to commemorate the International Day for Tolerance. Given the current socio political crisis in Burundi, IETV in close partnership with the College of Philosophers of Burundi (COPHIBU) and UNESCO have decided to celebrate the 2 International Days on Philosophy and Tolerance on the theme: “Philosophy and Tolerance enabling Intercultural Dialogue and Social Transformations”.

Despite the progress that has been made with the signature of the Arusha Peace Agreement in 2000 and the Cease Fire signed in 2002, people continue to face life-threatening violence on a daily basis in recent years. There is a critical need to address this in a way that facilitates a culture of tolerance, inclusivity and peace.

The day will consist of opening statements from the partners, several activities and two presentations by lecturers from the University of Burundi. The first presentation will focus on tolerance as a way to achieve intercultural dialogue and enable social transformations. The second presentation will focus on philosophical practices that can be used as tools to boost tolerance and pave the road towards social transformations.

UNESCO, COPHIBU and IETV have partnered since 2014, and through their collaborative efforts alongside the Government of Burundi, local universities, civil society organizations and faith based organizations, this event aims to achieve a strong sensitization of the population to promote a culture around the value of tolerance as well as inclusive dialogue for peaceful coexistence in all areas of life.
