WPFD 2010: UNESCO New Delhi Office

South Asia Regional Consultation on Freedom to Information: The Right to Know (3-4 May 2010, Male, Maldives)To mark World Press Freedom Day 2010, UNESCO´s Office in New Delhi is convening jointly with the UNDP and UNICEF country offices a South Asia Regional Consultation on Freedom to Information: The Right to Know, to be held on 3 & 4 May 2010 in Male, Maldives.

The overall objective of the event is to enhance awareness and understanding of the issues related to RTI legislation and implementation and to promote the exchange of country experiences on how access to information can strengthen governance, transparency and accountability and the crucial role that media can play in this process.

The expected outcome is that key RTI-related issues for policy and programme interventions in South Asian countries will be highlighted, and entry points to improve the programmatic support at the country-level in the areas of RTI will be proposed. A network of RTI practitioners, media professionals, civil society and other stakeholders across countries in South Asia will be formed to share experience, information and lessons learned on RTI challenges and implementation.
