WPFD 2010: UNESCO Phnom Penh Office

Phnom Penh celebration of The World Press Freedom Day 2010 (4 May 2010; National Institute of Education (NIE), Phnom Penh)

In Phnom Penh, World Press Freedom Day 2010 will be celebrated with a whole-day conference that UNESCO and the UN Office for Human Rights will co-organize. He event will be held in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and in cooperation with the Press Council of Cambodia (PCC), the Club of Cambodian Journalists (CCJ), the Cambodian Centre for Independent Media (CCIM) and the Department of Media and Communications (DMC). The celebration will take place at the National Institute of Education (NIE) on Tuesday, 4 May 2010. Invited speakers include representatives of the Cambodian Media, Cambodian government institutions, the donor community and NGOs, media students, and members of the Cambodian indigenous and Cham communities. 

Each panelist will focus on this year’s WPFD topic “Freedom of Information: The Right to Know” and participants will be invited to explore the importance of freedom of information as an integral part of freedom of expression and democratic governance in Cambodia. Additionally, an afternoon session will be arranged for the Cambodian Journalists Associations and Clubs, to exchange ideas and draft a Cambodian Declaration on “Freedom of Information: The Right to Know” as well as to hold a discussion on the Common Code of Ethics for Journalists in the country. 

A video on the opinions of the general public on press freedom will be produced by Cambodian media students, indigenous young people working at the Ratanakiri Community Radio, and the Cham Iman San community, compiling interviews done in different areas. The video will be shown during the event’s morning session, along with another one sent from Thailand. They will bring to the event the perspective on the subject from different areas and diverse communities in Cambodia and Thailand.
