2010 World Press Freedom Day Preparatory Meeting (26 April 2010; UN House Almaty and UN House Astana, via TV conference)

This meeting will be held in preparation for World Press Freedom Day 2010, connecting the UN House in Almaty and the UN House in Astana to facilitate a discussion between UNESCO´s Almaty Office, UNDP and other UN partners working within the Communication for Development Inter-agency framework. The tele-conference will focus on the initiatives to take place in commemoration of World Press Freedom Day in the country. 

Several activities under the Access to Information theme will be organized jointly by UNESCO, UNDP and other UN agencies, including the submission to government of a model Freedom of Information Law, for its practical use during the process to draft the new access to information law. 

The recorded message from UNESCO´s Director General, provided by FED/BPI at UNESCO Headquarters, will be disseminated among the public to raise awareness about the theme for this year´s World Press Freedom Day. A discussion on issues related to TV broadcasting is also being planned, to which representatives of the national broadcasting sector will be invited. 

There are also plans to disseminate the message from UNESCO´s Director-General on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day via the Eurasian Media Forum, to be held on 29 April 2010 in Almaty (for further information visit: www.eamedia.org).
