Supporting the development of National Education in Syria: Second Training of Trainers Course for the Second Chance and Catch-up Programmes

Primary and Secondary Education were granted to almost everyone in Syria before the crisis erupted in 2011. However, as a result of the protracted crisis, millions of children were deprived of education opportunities. Recognizing the importance of education and responding to the educational needs of children, UNESCO and the Ministry of Education in Syria have set up a two-month intensive program in the summers of 2016 and 2017, whose main objective was to support students who have failed in the final exams to enroll at schools and pass the examination.

UNESCO Beirut organized in early 2016 the first Training of Trainers (TOT) to provide 20 national trainers with teaching skills in accelerated learning programmes. The team was assigned to undertake similar training inside Syria at the central level and governorate level in 2016 and 2017. Based on the successes achieved in the second educational opportunity program in terms of access to students in need of educational support and wide geographic coverage of the programme, UNESCO decided to continue their support for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Against this backdrop, UNESCO Beirut launched on 10-12 May 2018 a second TOT to build the capacity of a core team of local trainers and provide them with training skills, accelerated learning concepts and psychosocial support skills, so that they can contribute to the Accelerated Learning Programme in the summers of 2018 and 2019.

The training, which took place at UNESCO Beirut premises and was opened by speeches by Dr. Hamed Al Hammami, Director of UNESCO Beirut, and Mr Abdul Hakim Al Hamad, Assistant to the Minister of Education in Syria, targeted 24 teachers, trainers and experts. It covered a wide range of topics, including: Accelerated learning; Active learning approaches; Psychosocial support; Education in overcrowded and combined classrooms; Learning Assessment in accelerated learning; and lessons learnt from the evaluation of 2016 and 2017 programmes. The training was based on expert presentations, group work, and interactive role play.
