Pacific Youth Festival (Tahiti, July 2006)

From 17-22 July 2006 in Tahiti, the Pacific Youth Festival brought together up to 1,400 young people from 30 countries and islands of the Pacific. The festival has four central pillars: fair globalization, sustainable development, cultural diversity and conditions for peace. Discussions took place around nine themes: education and training for all, social and professional integration, sustainable development, cultural diversity, health, equality for all, peace, active citizenship and good governance. A Youth Charter gathered all the resolutions adopted by Pacific young people.

Responding to requests from the Organizing Committee of the Festival, UNESCO's inputs included support to the development of workshop contents and methodology, mobilization of networks and enhancement of ownership in the region. In line with the recommendations of the fourth UNESCO Youth Forum held in late September 2005, cooperation focused in particular on the theme of education for sustainable development.

UNESCO's contribution were channelled through the Organization's Youth Section (contact youth(at)unesco.org) and Office for the Pacific States in Apia (contact apia(at)unesco.org).
