Nigeria (April 2018)

A Training of Trainers workshop on Microscience, co-organized by UNESCO, the International Academy For The Gifted Ltd/Gte and the Nigerian National Commission for UNESCO, took place at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State (Nigeria).
It started with an Opening Ceremony, which included welcome addresses and remarks from the following institutions: the College of Physics of the University (Dean), the Nigerian National Commission for UNESCO, UNESCO Regional Office in Abuja and UNESCO Headquarters. Forty-three participants, mainly secondary school teachers from local private schools, as well as some science lecturers from the Federal University of Agriculture, participated in the training of trainers’ workshop, carried out by UNESCO Headquarters.The one-and-a-half day workshop included the following half-day sessions:

• practical training using chemistry kits, attended by chemistry teachers;
• practical training using biology kits, attended by biology teachers;
• practical training on environmental chemistry, attended by chemistry and biology teachers;
• practical training using microburette kits, attended by chemistry teachers and
• practical training using electricity kits, attended by physics teachers.

After the workshop, discussions on the sustainability of the initiative (immediate follow-up, pilot phase and extension phase) started with remarks from the people trained and involved UNESCO Headquarters and UNESCO Regional Office in Abuja, as well as a number of local stakeholders: a Nigerian board member of UNESCO’s International Basic Science Programme (IBSP) – the local coordinator of the Project, the Federal University of Agriculture in Abeokuta, the Nigerian National Commission for UNESCO and the Nigerian Association of Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA).
