Организация Объединенных Наций провозгласила период с 2021 по 2030 год Десятилетием науки об океане в интересах устойчивого развития. Его цель — мобилизовать усилия всех заинтересованных сторон для предотвращения деградации морских экосистем, содействия научным исследованиям в области океанографии и поиска рациональных методов использования ресурсов Мирового океана.
