Director-General condemns murder of journalist Subhash Kumar Mahto, India

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has called for an investigation into the killing of local news journalist Subhash Kumar Mahto near his home in the village of Sakho, in India’s eastern state of Bihar, on 20 May.

I condemn the murder of Subhash Kumar Mahto and call on the authorities to investigate this killing to determine if it was linked to his work as a journalist. Reporters’ ability to inform local communities must be safeguarded and those who use violence against them be held to account.

Mahto, a reporter with a local cable station City News, frequently posted his reports on Public App, a local smartphone-based video application, on which he had a significant following.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
