Funded by the Government of Iceland and run in partnership with UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), the Fisheries Training Programme promotes the sustainable use and management of living aquatic resources in less developed countries.
The Fisheries Training Programme will offer applied postgraduate scientific training for fisheries professionals, coordinate targeted short courses in partner countries and administer postgraduate scholarships to former fellows.
The Fisheries Training Programme is part of the training portfolio of GRÓ - International Centre for Capacity Development – Sustainable use of Natural Resources and Societal Change, a Category 2 Centre under the auspices of UNESCO, funded by the Government of Iceland and hosted within the Icelandic Marine and Freshwater Research Institute. The Centre is the first cross-sectoral Category 2 Centre in the history of UNESCO, providing training in Fisheries, Gender Equality, Geothermal Energy and Land Restoration, with a specific focus on strengthening organizational, institutional and individual capacities in developing countries. The Centre’s programmes render a substantial impact in developing countries and contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
