Egypt: A Description of Egypt from the beginning of the 20th Century seen through a postcard collection

Collection of Egyptian postcards through various themes such as arts, trades, buildings, places, views and pharaohs.

This project concerns a postcard collection which was acquired by the department of Egyptian Antiquities of the Louvre. This collection comprises 1,340 postcards dating from the beginning from the 20th century. It provides a stunning picture of Egypt that compares with a description published at the beginning of the 19th century. This is why the same title was used, and there is a chapter devoted to a comparative description of Egypt through a collection which goes back one hundred years, and of which the original description is approximately two hundred years old.

Most of the cards are stamped with dates varying primarily between the years 1900 and 1914. Some of these postcards are embossed; others are coloured with stencils. The majority are collotype prints and there are some rare examples of photographs.
