Webinars for Latin America and the Caribbean
Leave no one behind in times of the COVID-19 pandemic
UNESCO has reported that due to the closure of educational institutions as a measure to stop the spread of COVID-19, in early April 2020 around 1,576,021,818 students were out of school worldwide. Of those, more than 160,000,000 are in Latin America and the Caribbean, representing an unprecedented emergency.
Governments in the region have rapidly implemented distance learning modalities, supported educational staff, and mobilized parents, caregivers, and communities to ensure continued learning.
At the regional level, multiple instances of technical and political dialogue have been convened and three common central themes that require immediate and long-term political and programmatic support have been highlighted:
- The current scenario indicates important advances and innovation in the area of distance education, through the use of technologies in recent weeks, more than at any other time. However, there are important challenges to guarantee equity and inclusion, especially to the most vulnerable and marginalized population groups;
- Need to move towards resilient and flexible educational systems, with a focus on preparedness; and
- New mentality and paradigm shift: towards interdisciplinarity and intersectoriality that goes beyond sectoral thoughts and actions focused on education, highlighting the unprecedented opportunity to transform national education systems. This spirit of transformation makes the SDG-Education 2030 Agenda more relevant and necessary.
Considering these areas, UNESCO, in collaboration with the Regional Education Cluster for Latin America and the Caribbean, launches a series of exchanges of knowledge and information to respond to the pandemic, focusing on the four pillars of SDG-Education 2030: equity, inclusion, quality and learning throughout life. The objective of this initiative is to support the Ministries of Education and the different educational actors for the development, management and dissemination of relevant evidence that informs the immediate response, as well as the medium and long-term actions.
