UNESCO IITE at the Telecom Leaders’ Summit 2022

On the 9th of May 2022, the SAMENA Telecommunications Council has organised the Telecom Leaders’ Summit in Dubai. The event was held under the chairmanship of Saudi Arabia’s stc Group and with patronage of the UAE’s Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority. This year, the SAMENA Council and Huawei Technologies invited UNESCO IITE to present the findings of its soon-to-be-published report on ICT-related higher education and TVET in Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE.

In his welcome message, Mr. Bocar BA, CEO of SAMENA Council, highlighted the importance of resilience for the telecommunication sector and beyond:

Our desired outcomes of the Leaders’ Summit 2022 are really to foster new drive in making beneficial utilization of 5G, cloud, and related technologies for improving the human condition and prosperity for people and businesses. We want to see more connectedness to overcome the digital divide in meaningful ways.

Mr. Denis Kapelyushnik, UNESCO IITE, presented an overview of factors related to ICT education and capacity building outlined in the report “Talent Ecosystem for Digital Transformation: Insight Report on ICT in Higher Education and TVET in the Middle East and Pakistan”. The Institute’s Unit of Digital Pedagogy and Learning Materials prepared this report between October 2020 and January 2022 within the framework of the project supported by Huawei Technologies.

The Leaders’ Summit is the annual industry advocacy and leadership platform gathering executives of leading communications services companies, regulators and other government officials. This year, the Summit welcomed chairpersons and CEOs from the private sector and top decision-makers from regulatory authorities around the region. The Summit had the full participation of global leaders and entities focused on institutionalizing and fostering cross-sector digitization and collaboration.
