Director-General condemns killing of journalist Juan Arjón López in Mexico

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has condemned the killing of online journalist Juan Arjón López whose body was found on 16 August in the town of San Luis Río Colorado, in the north of Mexico. He is the 16th journalist killed in Mexico since the beginning of the year.

I condemn the abduction and killing of Juan Arjón López. I call on the Mexican authorities to take rapid and effective measures to investigate this killing. Such investigations are essential to end the scourge of impunity for crimes against journalists.

Juan Arjón López, founder and editor of the A Qué Le Temes Facebook news page, had been missing since early August. He is reported to have died from a violent blow to the head.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
