Director-General condemns killing of journalist Muhammad Younis in Pakistan

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has condemned the killing of Muhammad Younis in Pakistan’s Punjab Province on 27 August.

I condemn the killing of Muhammad Younis. Violence against journalists puts a strain on freedom of expression, press freedom and on access to information. I urge the authorities to spare no effort in ensuring that those responsible for this crime are brought to justice.

Muhammad Younis, a journalist with Urdu-language newspaper Express and President of Shorkot Press Club, was shot dead by unidentified assailants as he was approaching his farm in Mouza Manganwala.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
