Director-General condemns murder of newspaper owner and journalist Luiz Carlos Gomes in Brazil

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has condemned the killing of newspaper owner and community radio journalist Luiz Carlos Gomes in Italva, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the evening of 12 August.

I condemn the killing of Luiz Carlos Gomes. Violence against journalists not only targets individuals, it also strikes at the fundamental human right of freedom of expression and the right of citizens to access independent information. I call on the authorities to ensure that the perpetrators of this crime are brought to justice.

Gomes, the owner of the Tempo News newspaper who also presented a weekly programme on community radio Rádio Oásis FM, was killed by two men on a motorcycle on his way home with his wife.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
