University of Vocational Technology (UNIVOTEC) was established in 2008 and the National Institute of Technical Education (NITESL) became the Faculty of Training Technology. UNIVOTEC was established under the Ministry of Vocational & Technical Training under the Parliament Act No.31 of 2008. The main aim of the University is to improve both quantitative and qualitative aspects of Technical Education and Vocational Training in Sri Lanka:
(i) To assist in the progressive development of students in TVET sector to acquire a university education
(ii) Provide pedagogical training for Trainers serving in TVET organizations
(iii) Assist in development of course curricula for TVET sector
(iv) Provide extension courses on continuous professional development
It envisions to be the leading University providing technical and vocational education for all with aspirations to achieve professional excellence.
The mission of UNIVOTEC is:
-to provide services in human resources, curriculum, learning resources development, research and consultancy;
-to achieve professional excellence with ethical rectitude and;
-to liaise with global TVET sector, academic community and Industry.
