Mobile Literacy for Out-of-School Children project in Thailand (Microsoft, True Cooperation and MOE Thailand)

The project aims to enhance basic literacy and numeracy skills of 4,000 learners and train 100 teachers.
To that end, 700 tablets preloaded with an application “LearnBig” which contains over 1,000 materials in 3 languages (Thai, Burmese and Karen). The results of the project are as follows:

1. 60 MLCs and CLCs are equipped with ICT devices outreaching to more than 4,000 disadvantaged children along Thai-Myanmar border areas (with 1,440 learners in 2015 and 3,967 learners in 2016).
    
2. Capacity of 231 teachers and government officials in ICT skills have been developed – 170 teachers (with 40 trained in 2015), 45 government officials (30 trained in 2016), and 16 school directors are able to operate the devices and design integrated ICT lesson plans. The 1st phase trained teachers are able to apply ICT tools in their teaching. More than 600 parents and community members were also trained on ICT skills.
    
3. Overall learning achievement of the students from the 1st phase has been increased. 84.26% of learners have higher scores in Myanmar, 56.38% in Thai and 52.37% in Math. Teachers observed that learners enjoy learning and are more engaged in classroom activities. Most teachers felt that the use of ICT devices has changed their teaching methods from traditional way to more learner-centred approach.
    
4. The project has drawn the support from 11 organizations to collaboratively promote mobile learning for marginalized children. The project results were disseminated through meetings and online media - In addition to the project launching ceremony held in 2015 in Bangkok which was well attended by over 100 participants and media, the project results were presented at the Asia Education Summit on Flexible Learning Strategies for Out-of-School Children in February 2016 in Bangkok, the Mobile Learning Week in March 2016 in Paris, and the EdTech Asia Summit in July 2016 held in Bangkok.
