Southeast Asia ESD Teacher Educators Network
The Southeast Asia ESD Teacher Educators’ Network (SEA-ESD Network) is a network of teacher education institutions (TEIs) and universities in Southeast Asia committed to promoting ESD in their communities. Members work together to integrate ESD in teacher education, implementing ESD activities and sharing best practices across the region. The Network aims to continuously expand its reach to other institutions and communities in Southeast Asia and beyond.
Integrating ESD in teacher education in South-East Asia: a guide for teacher educators
https://esdteachers.bangkok.unesco.org is the website of the SEA-ESD Network which serves as a guide and a platform to share information on integrating ESD in teacher education. The guide takes readers through a step-by-step action research approach to integrate ESD in teacher education programmes and practices.
The step-by-step process is also accompanied by examples of stories shared by the Network members and their own efforts to integrate ESD in their teacher education practices. Additional resources include learning activities, teaching and learning tools, and reading resources.
Users can submit content in order to enrich the website as a dynamic platform and comprehensive database for integrating ESD in teacher education. We welcome submissions from anyone working in ESD and teacher education, not only those from Southeast Asia. Please send us information or stories about your own projects, activities, teaching and learning tools, and reading resources through the form on this page.
The online guide is based on the guidebook Integrating ESD in teacher education in South-East Asia: a guide for teacher educators. The guidebook was published as a cumulative output of the SEA-ESD Network and its work under the 'Sustainability Begins with Teachers in South-East' project. To download the publication, click here.

How the Network was formed
The SEA-ESD Network was formed as a result of the project 'Sustainability Begins with Teachers in South-East Asia', jointly implemented in 2017 and 2018 by UNESCO Bangkok and the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) with the financial support of the Government of Japan. The project aimed at empowering teacher education institutions (TEIs) and universities in the sub-region to generate and engage in change actions to integrate ESD in teacher education. In particular, it highlights the crucial role teachers play in facilitating change towards a sustainable future and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
The first workshop of the project, held in Chiang Rai, Thailand in June 2017, brought together 10 TEIs and universities from Southeast Asia to design their change actions for ESD integration. These institutions then implemented actions for ESD integration while also disseminating the approach and mobilizing other institutions towards ESD integration through a series of in-country workshops held in Cebu, Philippines; Luang Prabang, Lao PDR; Kampot, Cambodia; Bangkok, Thailand; and Yogyakarta, Indonesia. In total, 26 institutions took part in the project process.
On 24-26 April, 2018, a project review workshop was organized in Bangkok during which the different in-country experiences were shared and the SEA-ESD Network was formed. The Network keeps in close contact through online channels, particularly the WhatsApp messaging service, continuing to share their successful ESD projects that are taking place in each of their institutions and communities.
On 19-20 September 2019, the Southeast Asia ESD Teacher Educators Network Meeting was organized to bring together members of the SEA-ESD Network for the first time since the final project meeting held in April 2018. During the meeting, members exchanged achievements made since the last meeting and planned joint activities to undertake in the coming years. In addition to the original Network members, four teacher education institutions were invited to join as new Network members.
