Dear readers,
The shift to distance learning has highlighted a persistent digital divide in terms of infrastructure, connectivity and the ability to engage with technology. Many TVET institutions have struggled to build the relevant capacities of staff while adjusting to the new realities of the pandemic. As the TVET sector faces a digital future that has arrived much sooner than expected, institutions will have to adapt to the changing paradigms of teaching and learning.
At the same time, the COVID-19 crisis has become a catalyst to advance innovative learning solutions and capitalize on the development of education technology. During the last quarter, UNESCO-UNEVOC implemented several activities to support TVET staff in responding to this digital transformation, including the 2021 TVET Leadership Programme and webinars matching private sector trainings to the needs of UNEVOC Centres.
For the post-pandemic recovery phase, it is essential to restore the role of teachers and trainers as key actors in rebuilding more adaptive education systems that are resilient against future shocks. “Teachers at the heart of education recovery” is the theme for the 2021 World Teachers’ Day, which will focus on the effect that the pandemic has had on education and teachers as well as the support teachers need to contribute to the recovery process.
Best wishes from the UNESCO-UNEVOC team
