Second Curriculum Development Workshop for the new 4-year Education College degree

Through the Strengthening Pre-Service Teacher Education in Myanmar (STEM) project, UNESCO is supporting the Ministry of Education in developing the new curriculum for the 4-year Education College degree. This work commenced in 2015-2016, with a review of the current curriculum used in Education Colleges (ECs) and the development of a Curriculum Framework for a competency-based curriculum for a 4-year degree programme. A Curriculum Core Team (CCT) with Teacher Educators from the Education Colleges and the Universities of Education is drafting the new curriculum (syllabi, textbooks, and teacher guides) with assistance from a team of international curriculum experts led by UNESCO.

Following Training Workshop in curriculum development in June 2017, 90 participants came together for the second of six training and drafting workshops for the development of a competency-based curriculum for the new Teacher Education College 4-year degree programme at the Panglong Hall, University of Yangon, from 28 August – 1 September 2017. Participants from Myanmar’s Ministry of Education, National Education Policy Commission (NEPC), Curriculum Core Team (CCT) with Teacher Educators from the Education Colleges (EC), Universities of Education and University for Development of National Races (UDNR), and development partners drafted subject syllabi based on the EC Curriculum Framework and the primary and middle school subject syllabi.

Consisting of both plenary and group work sessions, the workshop was facilitated to help the participants understand key concepts and documents for syllabus drafting. After the weeklong workshop, participants gained a good understanding of the structure of the draft EC Curriculum Framework, the Basic Education curriculum framework as well as subject syllabi developed so far for primary and middle school levels with which participants ensured to align the new EC subject syllabi drafts. Through series of group work, participants decided on EC subject syllabi template including scope and sequence of contents for all four years of degree and primary and middle teacher specialization tracks.

The next workshop will be with international curriculum experts to review the draft subject syllabi developed during this workshop and to receive training in how to start developing textbooks based on the syllabi.
