About the project:

Koalisi Seni Indonesia (Perhimpunan Koalisi Seni Indonesia –Association of Indonesian Art Coalition), an association that conducts policy advocacy in the arts sector, proposes to: 1) promote artistic freedom by conducting a study about key stakeholders' practical knowledge of artistic freedom; 2) strengthen capabilities of journalists, artistic communities and human rights organizations in monitoring and reporting artistic freedom violations; 3) foster greater understanding of the current state of artistic freedom in Indonesia.

How does this project contribute to the implementation of the 2005 Convention?

  • Strengthens measures that promote and protect the freedoms of creation and expression and participation in cultural life -  Quantifiable data will be collected and made available to monitor the state of artistic freedom in Indonesia. Policy recommendations based on the data obtained will be formulated and addressed to the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy. The project will also reinforce the capacities of the artistic community, journalists and human rights institutions to contribute to the monitoring of artistic freedom in the country.

  • Conduct an online survey to assess understanding of artistic freedom.
  • Present the results of the survey through public discussions, brochures and advocacy tools.
  • Develop a practical guide explaining the basic concepts of artistic freedom, strategies aimed at defending it and redressing violations.
  • Disseminate the guide to artistic communities, state arts education institutions, human rights organizations and key government institutions.
  • Create web pages on "Artistic Freedom in Indonesia" on the Koali Seni website as part of a digital media campaign.
  • Hold a series of public discussions on artistic freedom.
  • Train human rights organizations, artistic communities and journalists on mechanisms for monitoring artistic freedom.
  • Develop an online help desk to receive reports of artistic freedom violations.
  • Conduct a survey at the end of the project to verify changes in the understanding of artistic freedom.
  • Develop and publish policy recommendations to promote artistic freedom in Indonesia.
