Benefitting country(ies): Seychelles

Overview:

The project was implemented from 2017 to 2018 by the National Heritage Funds, with the objective to strengthen the institutional and human capacities to safeguard the country’s intangible cultural heritage. Through the implemented activities, the project helped reinforce legal frameworks for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage, in particular through its inclusion in the National Heritage Bill. It also raised significant awareness among policy-makers and communities from Seychelles’ three main islands, Mahe, Praslin and La Digue, on the importance of intangible cultural heritage. As one of the main achievements of the project, cultural professionals and communities were also trained on community-based inventorying through participatory video and on the preparation of nominations to the Convention’s Lists, in addition to receiving policy advisory services. Lastly, the project provided an important opportunity for the Department of Culture, the National Heritage Research and Protection section, the National Heritage Funds, the National Archives, the National Museums, the Creole Institute, the Seychelles Heritage Foundation, and the communities to work closely together for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage in Seychelles.
