UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has condemned the murder of Lourdes Maldonado Lopez in the northeastern border town of Tijuana on 23 January.

I condemn the murder of Lourdes Maldonado Lopez. Impunity for crimes against media workers cannot be allowed to persist, which is why I appeal to the authorities to ensure that the murder of Lourdes Maldonado Lopez does not go unpunished
Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director General

Maldonado Lopez, a contributor to various media outlets, was shot while driving her car in Tijuana, where another journalist had been killed less than a week earlier. She had been included in a national programme to protect journalists and human rights advocates facing threats to their safety, and is the third media worker to be killed in Mexico this year.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
