Outcomes of the International Conference on “Culture for Sustainable Cities”

From 10 to 12 December 2015, UNESCO organized the International Conference on “Culture for Sustainable Cities” in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China, in cooperation with the Hangzhou Municipal People’s Government and with the support of the National Commission of the People’s Republic of China for UNESCO.

The International Conference provided a key platform to share experiences and propose strategic recommendations to strengthen the role of culture in sustainable urban development at the international, national, regional and local levels.

With the presence of 250 participants including members of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN), gathered in the thematic panel 1 which topic was “Creative industries at the core of social and economic urban development”.     

The Conference concluded with the adoption of a landmark document, the “Hangzhou Outcomes”, which include 9 recommendations to contribute to the elaboration of a “New Urban Agenda” in the framework of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and in view of the Habitat-III Conference (Quito, Ecuador, October 2016).

The “Conclusions” particularly highlight “the importance of cities’ networks, including UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network […] in promoting and disseminating good practices in making better cities.”

All members of the Network are invited to consult the “Hangzhou Outcomes” and to implement the recommendations set out at the core of their policies to maximize the role of creativity to achieve inclusive and sustainable urban development.
