'Disability' or 'this ability'? Advocating for cultural rights in the post-COVID era
The programme Transcultura: Integrating Cuba, the Caribbean and the European Union through Culture and Creativity, implemented by UNESCO and funded by the European Union, invites you to participate to the online debate ‘Disability’ or ‘this ability? Advocating for cultural rights in the post-COVID era, on 1 and 2 December 2022, via Zoom.

In the Caribbean there are over 1 million persons living with some form of disability, which amounts to more than the population of certain countries in the region. This online event aims at supporting Caribbean creators, artists, and cultural professionals with disabilities of any kind in networking with their European peers, promoting and showcasing their talent, potential and work, as well as enhancing their international positioning and equitable inclusion in broader market circuits. Discussions will address four main topics:
- ‘Disability’ or ‘this ability’? Creative capacities and social barriers to be removed.
- Inclusiveness as a right and an entrepreneurial tool. Presentation of cases.
- Leveraging our art’s added value to penetrate extra-regional markets and events and succeed.
- Culture as the sixth sense. Let our voice be heard by cultural policy-making.
All the presentations will be close-captioned, and a sign-language interpreter will appear on screen to ensure that the content is accessible for all. Simultaneous interpretation in three languages (English, French and Spanish) will also be provided.
This event is organized in close collaboration with the Centre for Disability Studies at the University of West Indies.
