During the last assembly of the Ibero-American Sports Council (CID), the governments of the region approved the creation of the first common indicators to measure the impact of sport on development, within the framework of the UNESCO Fit for Life initiative.

On April 26, 2022, the Dominican Republic hosted the assembly of the Ibero-American Sports Council (CID). It convened the Ministers and High Authorities of Sports of the Ibero-American region. In this framework, UNESCO was invited to present, for the first time in the region, the new UNESCO Fit for Life initiative.

This initiative has been designed to address three current challenges: physical inactivity, mental health and inequality

Gabriela Ramos, UNESCO Assistant Director General for Social and Human Sciences

Fit for Life is about making smart investments in sport to drive better outcomes in education, health and equality in countries.

"In order to have better sports policies we need better evidence, which is why Fit For Life is based on having more information and data on the impact of sports for the well-being of society," Ramos concluded.

That is why CID and UNESCO have proposed the Ibero-American countries, to create the Ibero-American Indicators of sport for development. This tool seeks to help improve evidence-based sports policies, with reliable and comparable data that allows the impact of sports in Ibero-America to be measured. The Ministers and High Authorities of Sports of the region unanimously approved the proposal and highlighted their interest in actively participating in the process. This process will include the participation of sports organizations, academia, and international organizations.

"These indicators will be very valuable so that, with reliable information and evidence, we know what the true impact of sport is, and thus give it the prominent role it deserves in the development agenda and increase its investment," he stressed during his presentation. , Andrés Morales, UNESCO regional sports specialist for Latin America and the Caribbean.

UNESCO, CID and GIZ will form the technical committee in charge of leading the creation of the indicators and will be responsible for defining the work plan and the methodology of the process.
