Geneva lights up for International Day of Education

Details

To mark the International Day of Education this 24 January and on the initiative of the UNESCO Bureau of Education, the Geneva water fountain “Jet d’eau” lit up in blue (the color of the UN).

This year's theme, "To invest in people, prioritize education,” fully aligns with the dynamic created at the United Nation’s Transforming Education Summit, held in September 2022 in New York.

For several decades, UNESCO has been working to create the conditions to enable equal access to education for all children. Therefore, on this day, UNESCO called on all governments, civil society, and all partners who share this common interest to turn words into actions.
In a context of economic recession, multiform crises, and growing inequalities, not investing in education jeopardizes our common future because today, six out of ten children cannot read. 244 million children and young people are still out of school, and just recently, in 2020, the number of young people in employment has decreased by 34 million. Education must also be a global priority if we are to accelerate progress to reach the UN SDGs.
