En vertu de la résolution 63/111 du 5 décembre 2008, l'Assemblée générale des Nations Unies a proclamé le 8 juin Journée mondiale de l'océan.

L'initiative a été lancée à l’occasion du Sommet de la Terre, tenu à Rio de Janeiro au Brésil, en 1992. Le but de cette journée est de célébrer les océans, et de sensibiliser le grand public au rôle crucial qu'ils jouent dans notre subsistance, ainsi qu'aux différents moyens qui existent pour les protéger.

La Commission océanographique intergouvernementale de l'UNESCO coordonne avec la Division des affaires maritimes et du droit de la mer des Nations Unies (DOALOS) le Portail officiel des Nations Unies de la Journée mondial de l’océan, qui s'attache à promouvoir la Journée mondiale de l'océan et ses événements de sensibilisation.

UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) coordinates in partnership with DOALOS the official United Nations World Oceans Day Portal, which is instrumental in building support for ocean awareness events on 8 June.

UNESCO has also launched the #GenOcean Campaign, as part of the UN Ocean Decade 2021-2030, to make it easy for citizens from all walks of life to use knowledge and science to act for the ocean we need. Join the campaign!

The ocean connects, sustains, and supports us all. Yet its health is at a tipping point and so is the well-being of all that depends on it. As the past years have shown us, we need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes its bounty but instead restores its vibrancy and brings it new life. This year’s United Nations World Oceans Day, on 8 June 2022, will highlight the theme Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean. This is the first hybrid celebration of the annual event, hosted in-person at the UN Headquarters in New York and broadcast live. The Global Event for the United Nations World Oceans Day 2022 will bring together the communities, ideas, and solutions that are working to protect and revitalize the ocean and everything it sustains.
