Multi-level governance in the Amazon basin, including transboundary cooperation is essential to ensure adequate integrated water management to safeguard water and sanitation as a human right, as well as overall sustainability in the basin.

A key form of transboundary cooperation entails a common vision, harmonized planning as well as different modalities of knowledge exchange, and joint research on water related issues. Therefore, international cooperation for the integral and sustainable management of systems of life is vital to move towards the restoration of harmony within the ecosystem - efforts particularly relevant in the Amazon context that contains a significant part of the worlds’ biodiversity.

These are some of the issues discussed on the event entitled “Transboundary Cooperation and Science for Integrated Sustainable Management of Amazon Waters” organized on March 22nd, at the UN 2023 Water Conference, by the Plurinational State of Bolivia, in association with the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP), ANA Brazil (National Water and Sanitation Agency), the Regional Center for Groundwater Management (CeReGAS), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and The Amazon We Want Organization. This side event discusses significant advances, challenges, and opportunities in the area of regional cooperation on data, information and knowledge generation and sharing in the Amazon basin, detailing the outlook and commitments of relevant partnerships.

The Water Action Agenda will turn the political momentum created by the UN 2023 Water Conference into tangible and ambitious action to get progress on track. This event is part of the path to achieve that.
