Alongside their grandparents, they learn both the meaning of values and the importance of living together without discrimination. And with Félix and Awa, their best friends, they discover, while having fun, the richness of their own culture and that of the world around them.

With a vocabulary adapted to children, and modern and colorful illustrations, the Bintou & Issa collection imagined by UNESCO and Les Éditions Langages du Sud appeals to children aged 5 to 9 from all walks of life.

Developed within the framework of UNESCO's Routes of Enslaved Peoples project, this series of seven albums is designed to raise awareness among young people, in an educational and entertaining way, of the history of slavery and its contemporary consequences, in particular by highlighting the significant historical figures associated with this history, discovering the various places of memory and the decisive role played by enslaved people in the fight for its abolition. The cultural and economic contributions of people of African descent to modern societies are also highlighted.

In order to deconstruct the poison of racism, the question of transmission to the younger generation is essential. Youth must understand that racism began with slavery and that slaves, despite incredibly tough conditions, were able to resist culturally and physically to assert their dignity as human beings. With this series of publications, we want to create a new narrative for the new generation to free themselves from the damaging constructs of the past.

Since its inception in 1994, "Routes of Enslaved Peoples: Resistance, Liberty and Heritage" project has contributed to the production of knowledge, the development of scientific networks, and has accompanied and supported memorial initiatives on slavery and the historical struggles for its abolition. The project has played an important role in "breaking" the silence surrounding the history of slavery and inscribing in the universal memory this tragedy that has shaped the modern world.

The first title, Bintou & Issa sur l'île de Gorée, written by Kidi Bebey and illustrated by Moka Celess, was presented at the Salon du livre africain de Paris, which took place from 17 to 19 March.
