The Bells of Al-Saa’a Convent in Mosul

The story of the bells of Al-Saa’a Convent dates back to 1876 when the bell tower was offered to Iraq by Empress Eugenie of France.

Along the years, it became a powerful symbol for all Mosul’s community members. The structure of the Al-Saa’a Convent was damaged during the occupation of the city by Da’esh and its convent was looted and ransacked. The Convent lost its clock and three bells.

Watch this video and find out how after years of silence the clock and bells returned to Mosul and now echo again in the streets of the city.

A luxury product prized in imperial Rome, silk has given its name to routes which, for two millennia, have woven the historical, cultural and mythical dialogue between East and West.

An emblematic UNESCO project launched in 1988, the Silk Roads program has contributed to highlighting the richness of the encounters made along these routes.

The UNESCO Courier is devoting a special edition to the project this year on the occasion of its 35th anniversary celebrations.
