UNESCO, drawing on its interdisciplinary expertise in education, the sciences and culture, is convening a virtual Ministerial Meeting on Generative AI in Education on 25 May 2023.

The launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT application in late 2022 triggered global interest in generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications. It has accelerated the development and launch of several other tools that can produce language, images, computer codes and other outputs with remarkable speed and fluency. These emerging technologies present immediate - as well as far-reaching - opportunities, challenges and risks to education systems. They have also brought to the surface numerous ethical concerns.

The roundtable aims to bring together Ministers of Education and esteemed AI experts to support education leaders in developing sound governance structures and policy responses in their diverse and unique contexts, through technical advice and peer-to-peer exchange.

UNESCO will present a synthesis of global policy responses, which will be followed by presentations by AI experts. The roundtable will further provide Ministers of Education opportunities to share ideas about governance and policy approaches to generative AI, as well as to reflect on the future implications of generative AI for knowledge, learning and research.

The primary purpose of this virtual roundtable is to facilitate peer learning, enabling ministers to share insights into experiences and approaches in various national contexts.

Inputs from the meeting will be used to inform the development of UNESCO guidelines to help Member States establish policies to ensure safe, ethical, effective and equitable use of AI in education.
