On the occasion of the International Day for Countering Hate Speech and as part of the Social Media 4 Peace project, UNESCO will host a Webinar in partnership with The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) on 16 June 2023 from 10:00am to 12:00am (EAT) in Kenya.
On the occasion of the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, UNESCO will host a Webinar in partnership with The National Cohesion and Integration Commission

The webinar will provide a platform for expert reflections, knowledge sharing and multistakeholder engagement on online hate speech and ethnic contempt in Kenya. It will also offer an opportunity for discussions on possible mechanisms for addressing hate speech and disinformation by members of the national multistakeholder coalitions on Content Moderation and Freedom of Expression formed within the UNESCO project Social Media 4 Peace funded by the European Union.

The webinar will focus on 2 topics:

  1. Understanding online hate speech and ethnic contempt in Kenya
  2. Analysis of legal provisions and regulatory mechanisms for addressing hate speech and disinformation in Kenya

This intervention is aligned with UNESCO’s overall strategy to combat disinformation by fostering the information as a public good and strengthening the transparency of the internet ecosystem. It will contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 16, to promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies and to the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech for Kenya.

About Social Media 4 Peace

The UNESCO project “Social Media 4 Peace” is funded by the European Union and implemented in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Indonesia, and Kenya since January 2021. The overall objective is to strengthen the resilience of societies to potentially harmful content spread online, in particular hate speech inciting violence while protecting freedom of expression and enhancing the promotion of peace through digital technologies, notably social media.
