Mohamed Abdulaleh: A Talented Sculptor Helping to Rebuild Mosul's Cultural Identity

UNESCO in partnership with the UAE is restoring Mosul's landmarks, one carving at a time

Mohamed is working tirelessly on carving the exquisite Mosuli Faresh stone and geometric decorations by hand as part of the reconstruction project of the Al-Tahera Syriac Catholic Church. This incredible initiative is being carried out by UNESCO in collaboration with the state board of antiquities and heritage in Nineveh, and in partnership with the United Arab Emirates.

Not only is Mohamed contributing to this vital project, but he's also playing a significant role in reviving the dying art of hand carving in Mosul. He's passionate about passing on his knowledge and skills to future generations and reviving the cultural and historical heritage of the city through this unique artistic craft.

Mohamed’s work is part of the Revive The Spirit Of Mosul initiative, which is a UNESCO-led project aimed at rebuilding and revitalizing Mosul's cultural heritage after years of conflict and destruction. The initiative includes a wide range of activities, such as the restoration of historic landmarks, the revival of traditional crafts and skills, and the promotion of cultural events.

One of the significant benefits of the initiative is that it has created job opportunities for locals of Mosul, like Mohamed. By providing training and employment opportunities for artisans and craftspeople, the project is not only helping to preserve the city's cultural heritage but also supporting the economic development of the community.
