Maya GABEIRA

The Brazilian surfer c was appointed UNESCO Champions for the Ocean and Youth in June 2022. 

Born in 1987 in Brazil, Maya Gabeira is an internationally acclaimed professional surfer, having won the "Billabong XXL Award" - the highest wave ever surfed by a woman - five times in a row. Maya Gabeira started surfing at the age of 14 and is now 35 years old.  

Maya Gabeira is committed to gender equality and the protection of the ocean. She is also a member of the Board of Directors and Ambassador of the NGO Ocean. Maya Gabeira defines herself as a witness to the degradation of coastal areas, the complexity of protecting the Ocean and the urgency of implementing both mass and science-based communication.
