Abuja Declaration on Global Financing for Media and Information Literacy adopted in Nigeria

On the 11th anniversary of Global Media and Information (MIL) Week, stakeholders worldwide unwaveringly reaffirmed the urgency of advancing global financing for MIL development to strengthen people’s access to media and information literacy competencies, thereby fighting against disinformation and building trust.

The Abuja Declaration highlights progress made in advancing media and information literacy for all to build people’s resilience to the challenges of the new information and digital ecologies while helping them to capitalize on the many opportunities.

It foregrounds the critical importance of financing media and information literacy globally if sustainable changes are to be achieved and calls for more robust media and information literacy policies and strategies including accountability checks, regulation and self-regulation on the part of digital platforms and media.

Abuja Declaration on Global Financing for Media and Information Literacy: An Imperative to Fight against Disinformation and Build Trust is more than a declaration but a framework and an action plan.

It sets forth specific actions to be taken to improve global financing of media and information literacy for all, calling on all stakeholders such as international/bilateral donors, foundations, intergovernmental organizations including UN entities, private sector organizations including digital communications platforms, libraries, advertisers, media, as well as civil society organizations including NGOs, community-based organizations, the research community, religious and cultural institutions.
