SHS MOST/GEG Seminar on “Automation – Digital Anthropology"

The UNESCO SHS MOST/Groupe d'études géopolitiques (GEG) series of seminars on "Human Sciences and Social Transformations" aims to integrate new concepts into our analysis of the transformations of contemporary societies and the social ties that bind people together, through dialogues between academia and public policy.

This second session on “Automation – Digital Anthropology” will examine the impact of artificial intelligence on humanity and societies. It will take place at l’École Normale Supérieure in Paris (45 rue d’Ulm, room Histoire), from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm (GMT +2), on 25 May 2023.

Among the technological paradigms that are transforming our societies, artificial intelligence (AI) is particularly salient, due to the scale and scope of its development and pervasiveness. As generative AI models such as Chat GPT’s went viral, they caught the attention of the broader public well beyond experts’ circles, raising fears of rapid and profound structural changes that may irrevocably transform the way we work, live and interact, undermining the very fabric of societies.

The evolution of AI depends on human decisions, and societies have options to influence the course of this transformation through collective choice, such as accelerating the implementation of UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence. What can States do to ensure societies are ready for the AI transformation? How to make sure we have the right regulations in place?

The session will be chaired by François Candelon, Global Director Henderson Institute, Boston Consulting Group.
