Director-General condemns killing of journalist Griselda Blanco in Argentina

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has called for a full and transparent investigation into the killing of journalist Griselda Blanco in Curuzú Cuatiá in northeastern Argentina on 20 May.

I condemn the killing of Griselda Blanco. Journalists and media workers, particularly those exposing wrongdoing and human rights abuses, must be protected from violence and reprisals. I call upon the authorities to ensure that the announced investigation into this crime is full and transparent, and that those responsible are brought to justice.

Blanco, a local radio journalist who published her work on numerous platforms, including her own website, Griselda Blanco Noticias, was found hanged in her home. She had previously received threats linked to her work.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists, including with a particular focus on the safety of women journalists, through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
