UNESCO and Tanzania celebrate the World Kiswahili Language Day

Promoting cultural heritage and linguistic diversity
World Kiswahili Day 2023

On 7 July 2023, the UNESCO Dar es Salaam Office, the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Sports of the United Republic of Tanzania, and the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Sports from the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, held the momentous celebration of World Kiswahili Language Day in Zanzibar. The event brought together UN Agencies, diplomatic corps, private sector representatives, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), academia, creatives, youth, and other valued partners.

The celebration served as a platform to honor the rich cultural heritage and linguistic diversity embodied by the Kiswahili language. The Commemoration was graced by H.E Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, who emphasized the significance of Kiswahili in promoting national unity and intercultural dialogue.

Mr. Michel Toto, Head of Office and UNESCO Representative highlighted the importance of Kiswahili language, as well as reaffirmed UNESCO’s dedication to the preservation and promotion of Kiswahili.

With over 200 million speakers worldwide, Kiswahili serves as a bridge, fostering dialogue and understanding among people of different cultures and backgrounds

Throughout the day, participants engaged in a diverse range of activities including the Chaso drama, dialect poems and instant poems, which showcased the multifaceted aspects of Kiswahili. Captivating performances by talented artists and musicians mesmerized the audience, highlighting the expressive power of the language.

The Kiswahili Day celebration was a testament to the collective dedication and collaborative spirit shared by all participants. Attendees expressed their commitment to continuing the promotion and preservation of Kiswahili in all spheres of society
