I condemn the killing of Cresenciano Bunduquin and urge the authorities to pursue those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice. The continued targeting of journalists reporting on environmental issues represents a particularly concerning trend for freedom of expression.

Bunduquin was reportedly shot four times in the early hours of the morning by two gunmen on a motorcycle as he was leaving his home. He was the radio host of “Batita at Talakayan”, a popular show on a number of radio stations like DWXR 101.7FM, MUX and other media outlets, and had recently covered local environmental issues. News media reported he had recently received death threats linked to his work.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
