The media in the region faces different challenges and obstacles on the road to becoming a free, safe, independent, and pluralistic media environment. These includes political instability, vague or inconsistent media laws, lack of diversity of media that is partially linked to media viability issues, as well as sporadic attacks, imprisonments, and even death of journalists. There are also classic media development challenges including lack of capacity building, technology, and funding.
