The Role of Sediments and Hydropower in River Basin Management.

The transport of sediments is a natural process in river systems. However, human activities have led to significant changes of natural sediment loads in rivers over the past decades. These changes negatively influence important issues such as flood risk, inland navigation, ecology and hydropower production. For the latter, the loss of storage capacity due to sedimentation is a significant problem. The World bank has undertaken a global project on the issue, in the framework of which UNESCO has been assigned tasks including the implementation of 3 case studies and the contribution to the organization of 3 regional capacity building workshops on sediment management at river basin level.
