The Paris Call on Software as Heritage for Sustainable Development (2019) laid the basis for UNESCO's work towards the preservation and sharing of the knowledge embodied in Software source code. Building a solid international community of diverse stakeholders that supports the Software Heritage archive as a "common good" supports inter-alia Member States to promote the development of shared infrastructures for the collection, preservation and user-friendly access to open source software and source code. This also entails developing tools and practices to facilitate the collection and sharing of landmark software source code and the history of its development (Software Stories) in collaboration with memory institutions (e.g. computer museums, libraries, etc.).
