• The UNESCO Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture was established in 1998 to commemorate the designation of the city of Sharjah as the Capital of Arab Culture. It is fully funded by His Highness Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohamed Al Qasimi of Sharjah. • The Prize of US$60 000 has been awarded since 2001 annually to two laureates - individuals, groups or institutions "who, through their artistic, intellectual or promotional work, have contributed to the development and diffusion of Arab culture in the world".
